Shaolin Death Grip
story by Ayko...Willy Luke Muschiol
based on the Shaw Brothers film 'Shaolin Hand Lock', script from I Kuang
note: I use the western style of surname last and given name first in the synopsis...
Pai Li and Hao Ling are illegal weapons dealers smuggling cargo from Asia into Arab countries using a Thai fishing ship as a cover supplying terrorists and fueling middle eastern wars while getting wealthy. One night, while personally making a delivery, Pai and Hao jump ship and barely escape coast guard authorities. The two rush to their estate. Pai bursts in on his wife just as she is putting their three siblings to bed. He tells her that she is to quickly pack basic necessities while he goes to pack as much gold and cash as he and Hao are able into the escape helicopter.
Before Pai can approach Hao, Pai overhears Hao talking to one of their henchman about the deal he made with corrupt coast guard officials and that the cargo is safe and the police are on their way to arrest Pai who is to take full blame leaving Hao as sole king of a greater smuggling operation like never before, and caring for Pai's 'sexy lady'. Hao rushes back to his wife who has been taken away by Hao's men. He grabs the children and rushes off to the helicopter as the estate is raided by the police and Hao, with Pai's wife, escapes through a secret tunnel. Pai is confronted by police close to the helicopter as he bursts out with amazing martial arts abilities enabling him to barely escape. In the mayhem, the eldest sibling gets left behind in the hands of the police.
Two decades later...
Master Pai is training his son and daughter, Cheng Ying and Meng Ping, how to master the 'Shaolin Death Grip' and how to counter its one weakness. Cheng and Meng announce they are going into town to buy their father a birthday present. Pai continues training with two other pupils.
Yun Biao Fang, an old childhood friend of Pai, unexpectedly arrives at their home and is welcomed in by an overjoyed Pai after Fang is searched for weapons. They chat. Fang pulls out a notebook and has Pai open it to look at old photos. Upon opening the notebook, a lethal gas is exposed to Pai killing him. His pupils attack Fang who kills them too thinking they are Pai's kids.
Upon returning, Cheng leaves his sister in charge of their home and martial arts school as he hunts down Fang. He catches up with Fang in an expensive bordell walking in on him about to have sex. He puts Fang in the Shoalin Death Grip and forces him to divulge who he is and who sent him before breaking his neck as the whore faints and security bursts in. Cheng easily handles security and escapes with the information that billionaire weapons lord Hao Ling sent Fang and where the next big weapons-for-drugs exchange is to be made. That night, Cheng busts up the deal and drives off with a truck load of weapons after setting the drugs aflame.
Over the next few days, Hao Ling tightens security at his villa. Cheng, posing as bounty hunter Dodt, bursts in on Hao and proves his talents by infiltrating his villa and easily handling security except for security boss, Kun Shi. Hao stops the two fighting and invites Cheng in for a chat. Cheng explains that he has had enough as a contract assassin and is interested in settling in with Hao as security boss. If Hao agrees, he can have all his weapons back that Cheng hid away in the mountains. Hao agrees and Cheng moves in as Hao's daughter takes a romantic interest in him to the dismay of Kun.
At a big time gangster feast Hao is hosting, one of the dancers turns out to be Meng who tries to kill Hao. Kun stops her and Cheng pretends to help him but actually helps his sister to escape while making it appear that he saved Kun from Meng's Shaolin Death Grip. Cheng is able to whisper to her where to hide and wait for him. She escapes.
Later at Hao's villa, Cheng discovers a blind woman being held and cared for by her daughter from Hao who had the woman blinded for refusing him as her husband before raping her. Cheng has no idea that the woman is his mother who is not dead as his father told him. Also unknown to anybody (except an undercover operative from chinese intelligence), Kun is Cheng's older brother and not an orphan as he was told.
That is the set up for the new and improved (if I may be so bold as to claim) storyline with a climax that will bring tears to the audience and deliver awesome action that the original could not reach in 1978 including a three on one fight between the reunited Li trio and the seemingly invincible Hao who now has developed counter attacks to the Shaolin Death Grip, and more...
